Born Nick Barber in 1968, the musician drew early inspiration from punk, reggae, rock and Indian traditions. His debut outing arrived in 1991 as the EP Disposable Hymn To The Infinite on Novamute Records. Subsequent output appeared on leading trance imprints, among them the Born Again EP issued by Matsuri Productions in 1995 and the single “Double Dragons” on Dragonfly Records. In 1995 he teamed with Simon Posford, better known as Hallucinogen, for the TIP Records release “Let’s Turn On.” The following year brought two further TIP singles, “Angelina” and “Destination Bom,” both of which quickly became trance-scene staples. TIP then issued Doof’s first full-length album, also titled Let’s Turn On, toward the close of 1996; the set ranks among the most cohesive and lasting statements in Goa trance. On cuts such as “Mars Needs Women” and “Destination Bom,” Barber refined the high-energy four-on-the-floor/Indian-mode approach into meticulously balanced arrangements, while “Sunshrine” and “Star Over Parvati” explored a calmer, more atmospheric trance palette. Throughout the album his meticulously chosen sonic palette provides a unifying thread. In 1997 he supplied “The Tower And The Star” to the TIP compilation Infinite Excursions II, and “Wormwhole” appeared the next year on TIP’s Beyond Colour. Additional material found homes on the Dubmission Records anthologies Dub Mashing Up Creation and Dubbed On Planet Skunk. Barber maintains an active schedule of performances throughout Europe and beyond, and he has delivered remixes for the Green Nuns Of The Revolution, Hallucinogen and the Infinity Project.
