Biography
Douglas Dare, a singer and songwriter, spent his formative years in Bridport, a modest seaside community in England’s southwestern region. His mother, who worked as a piano instructor, inspired him to begin creating music early on, yet he waited until 2008 to start writing songs during his university years in Liverpool.
The refined, introspective quality of his piano-centered material and its evocative vocals prompted parallels with Thom Yorke and James Blake, eventually drawing notice from Erased Tapes, the London-based independent label known for its avant-garde roster. After settling in the capital he joined the label, which put out his opening EP, Seven Hours, in September 2013.
An extended tour with fellow label artist Ólafur Arnalds, another experimental musician, came next, after which Dare returned to his hometown to develop his first full-length project. Working alongside percussionist and producer Fabian Prynn, he shaped the somber, personal ten-song album Whelm, issued in May 2014.
