Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein cuts a striking figure through his muscular physique, grease-smeared visage, and trademark devilock, and he earned his greatest renown through his tenure in the Misfits, the trailblazing horror-punk outfit fronted by Glenn Danzig. Born Paul Caiafa in Lodi, New Jersey, he is the younger sibling of the band’s bassist Jerry Only, whose birth name is Gerald Caiafa. Before becoming a member himself, Doyle worked as a roadie for the group and officially joined its ranks in 1980 when he turned 16. After the Misfits dissolved in 1983, he teamed with Only in 1987 to launch the Christian-metal ensemble Kryst the Conqueror. Years of legal wrangling concluded in 1995 when Only and Danzig reached a settlement over rights to the Misfits name, enabling Only, Doyle, and singer Michale Graves to tour and record under that banner until 2000 and to issue two studio albums plus one live LP. Doyle launched his own venture, Gorgeous Frankenstein, in 2005 and delivered its self-titled record two years later. During the same period he began making guest appearances alongside Danzig, ripping through abbreviated sets of Misfits material—an onstage collaboration that persisted in subsequent years. He formed the band Doyle in 2010 and released its self-titled album in 2013. September 2016 brought a Misfits reunion featuring Doyle, Danzig, Only, second guitarist Acey Slade, and Dave Lombardo, the original drummer of Slayer; the lineup delivered two enthusiastically received performances at that year’s Riot Fest dates in Chicago and Denver. Doyle followed with his second album, Doyle II: As We Die, in 2017.
