Germany's Dschinghis Khan, fronted by vocalist Peter Alexander and guided by producer Ralph Siegel, delivered an alternative to conventional pop themes through flamboyant historical narratives wrapped in glossy Euro-disco arrangements. Drawing partial influence from Boney M.'s hit single "Rasputin," Siegel assembled an elaborately costumed ensemble populated by distinct characters—evoking the Village People reimagined as Mongol invaders rather than gay archetypes—and submitted the track "Dschinghis Khan" to the 1979 Eurovision music contest. Though the entry failed to claim victory, the group's stylized visuals and unusual lyrical focus propelled the song to success in German dance clubs before the year ended. Their debut self-titled album likewise achieved strong sales, yet subsequent releases such as 1980's Rom, 1981's Wir Sitzen Alle Im Selben Boot, 1982's Helden, Schurken & der Dudelmoser, and 1983's Corrida saw the band move away from the traits that had set them apart. Public attention had already waned by then. The U.S. saw the 1995 release of Die Großen Erfolge, a compilation highlighting their strongest material.
