Biography
British pub rock outfit Ducks Deluxe emerged as a direct counterforce to the prevailing mid-'70s English pop landscape, where glitter and glam acts such as Gary Glitter and Sweet held sway alongside elaborate, technically demanding art-rock ensembles including Yes, Jethro Tull, and Genesis. Among the earliest exponents of the pub-rock movement, the group delivered straightforward American-inflected blues and boogie with flair and a complete indifference to prevailing trends. Although they never achieved widespread commercial success, their straightforward, self-reliant, blue-collar ethos—shared with fellow early pub-rock practitioners such as Dr. Feelgood—helped shape the British punk explosion that followed shortly afterward. Produced by associates including Dave Edmunds, the quartet of guitarist/vocalist Sean Tyla, guitarist Martin Belmont, bassist Nick Garvey, and keyboardist Andy McMasters issued several spirited albums that honored rock & roll’s elemental pleasures. Much of the material echoed the spirit of Chuck Berry, yet it carried an unmistakable verve that appealed to listeners seeking uncomplicated, high-energy performances suited to a pint and Little Richard-style excitement. The band’s sole major American push arrived belatedly when the Ducks Deluxe LP appeared three years after their initial breakup, prompted by former members’ subsequent involvement with higher-profile groups such as the Motors, the Rumour, and the Tyla Gang. In 2007 the original lineup reconvened for a series of European dates marking the thirty-fifth anniversary of their formation; the touring energy led to Side Tracks and Smokers, their first complete collection of new songs in more than three decades.
