Biography
Though born in France under the name Eric Chapus, Endorphin had firmly established himself as an Australian by the era when he achieved widespread recognition as a performer. Radio station Triple J propelled him into public view toward the close of the 1990s through initiatives aimed at nurturing local talent, where his cutting-edge electro sounds positioned him as one of the era's most distinctive discoveries from down under. Much of his earlier existence unfolded as that of a wanderer, with extended stays across Europe, Africa, and Asia before he put down roots in Queensland's humid climate. During the 1980s and early 1990s he explored numerous musical projects there, among them the industrial group Godzilla in the Mist, whose arrangements incorporated the sounds of chainsaws and angle grinders. In 1996 he wrote the track "Pacific" as a statement against French nuclear tests on Mururoa. While that release generated little momentum, the subsequent hypnotic single "Relapse" proved far more consequential, securing him a spot among Australia's leading artists via Triple J's Unearthed competition, a devoted cult audience, and a five-album contract with Sony. The result was the 1998 album Embraced, whose atmospheric tone earned both widespread critical acclaim and strong domestic sales. Its standout track "Satie" later appeared on the globally popular Café Del Mar, Vol. 6 compilation. Endorphin soon ranked among the country's most esteemed acts, frequently opening for international heavyweights including Massive Attack, Moby, and Faithless. He further solidified his standing as an innovator through the well-received trip-hop releases Skin in 2000 and AM: PM in 2001.
