Biography
Engine 88 blends noisy textures with pop songcraft in a style echoing Pavement and Fugazi. The lineup drew its members from two separate Bay Area acts. Damon Wood on guitar and vocals, David Hawkins on drums, and Eric Knight on bass had all performed earlier in the soul-funk group the Smoking Section, while Tom Barnes supplied vocals and guitar for Sordid Humor. In 1993 the band launched its own imprint, Shut Up and Drive, and issued the debut single "Funny Car/Drowning." The follow-up single "Bottle" surfaced on No Life. Caroline then issued the group's first album, Clean Your Room, during the middle of 1995.
