Shiner came together in 1992 on the edges of Kansas City, Missouri, with Allen Epley covering guitar and vocals, Jeff Brown on drums, and Shawn Sherrill on bass. Tim Dow soon stepped in for Brown, after which the band shared bills with Season to Risk, Sunny Day Real Estate, the Jesus Lizard, and Girls Against Boys. Before those tours wrapped, the DeSoto label—operated by their fellow road partners Jawbox—issued the group’s first single, “Brooks,” in 1993. DeSoto next released the debut album Splay in 1996, the same year Season to Risk’s Paul Malinowski took over bass. Following the appearance of Lula Divinia on Hit It! in 1997, Sub Pop released the single “Sleep It Off” that year. Two further DeSoto singles arrived next: “Farewell Bend Merger” in 1998 and “Semper Fi” in 1999. Starless, issued by Owned & Operated in 2000, introduced bassist and keyboardist Josh Newton—Malinowski having shifted to keyboards—along with Jason Gerken, who replaced Dow on drums. Shiner’s last album, The Egg, came out on DeSoto in 2001.
