Biography
Engine Down's sound merged propulsive grooves with echoes of Drive Like Jehu and an underlying emo-rock foundation. The four musicians first connected in Harrisonburg, VA, then relocated eastward to Richmond. Drawn from prior lineups in Sleepytime Trio, the Weak Link Breaks, and Bughummer, the group made its initial appearance at a murder-mystery film screening. Lovitt issued the band's self-titled 7" in 1998, followed the same year by the full-length Under the Pretense of Present Tense. Jonathan Fuller (guitar/vocals), Jason Wood (bass/vocals), Keeley Davis (vocals/guitar), and Cornbread Compton (drums) next delivered 2000's To Bury Within the Sound and 2001's A Sign of Breath EP while sharing stages with 400 Years, Speedwell, and Three Penny Opera. Their third album, the moodier Demure, also arrived in 2001.
Recordings and concerts cultivated a devoted audience that sustained CMJ Top 20 placement for eight weeks. The quartet favored 6/8 rhythms and occasionally expanded its bass-drums-guitar-vocals configuration with cello, vibraphone, or piano. Even in its unadorned form the band's attack—triplet-heavy propulsion, thick bass figures, aggressive guitar exchanges, and drawn-out vocals—remained compelling. In 2004 Engine Down moved from Lovitt to Lookout Records for the release of its fourth album, Enginedown. Early 2005 brought a European tour, after which the members announced an amicable split later that year. A final U.S. run that fall, supported by Bella Lea and Des Ark, preceded the musicians' dispersal. ~ John Vallier
