Biography
Operating out of London, Eric Lau functions as both a producer and a DJ, specializing in left-field hip-hop alongside R&B. His reputation rests primarily on collaborative efforts and a series of albums marked by subtle variety that rewards multiple plays, rather than standout singles. Over time, he has delivered multiple full-length projects that demonstrate varied methods and an organic progression in style. His debut came with New Territories in 2008, an album focused mainly on songs featuring vocals by Tawiah and Rahel, which appeared via Ubiquity. Subsequently, he shifted to Kilawatt, issuing Makin' Sound in 2010, Quadrivium in 2011, and One of Many in 2013. The initial pair of these served purely as instrumental displays of his ethereal, sample-driven productions, while the third brought back vocalists from prior work and incorporated contributions by Georgia Anne Muldrow and Fatima. He returned to instrumental territory with Examples, released on First Word in 2017. Beyond standalone singles and EPs under his own name, his body of work encompasses contributions involving Hil St. Soul, Homeboy Sandman, Guilty Simpson, and Yussef Kamaal, to name a few. In different roles, Robert Glasper and Erykah Badu have also enlisted his services.
