Biography
Born on 8 July 1964 in New York City, New York, USA, he is the son of legendary jazz bass player Charles Mingus and likewise performs on bass. Several years of his career were spent as a session musician and backing singer on recordings with artists such as Carla Bley, Bobby McFerrin and Karen Mantler. Mingus reveals a politically aware and somewhat rebellious streak in his own performances, recalling his father’s spirit though expressed through another genre. Numerous songs he delivers, some of which he also authors, address persistent problems that still detrimentally affect Black and mixed-race Americans. By the end of the 90s his standing had begun to reach beyond the United States, aided by a slot at England’s Meltdown Festival that included a concert at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
