Biography
Formed in Palm Desert, California during 1994, Fatso Jetson earned recognition as originators of the desert variant of stoner rock later popularized by their younger neighbors Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. Although the style had already reached maturity by the time the group began, their stature stems from earlier involvement by core members in foundational local acts Across the River, Englenook, Yawning Man, and the Sort of Quartet, ensembles frequently witnessed by teenage Kyuss musicians at regional gatherings. Beyond the sonic parallels shared with fellow stoner acts, Fatso Jetson draw from an expanded palette that embraces punk and surf elements. The band also delivers crushing riffs paired with guitar solos recalling Black Sabbath, yet their foundation in dense hard rock supports explorations of varied textures, extended instrumental passages, and eccentric lyrics that yield a distinctive punk-inflected art-rock identity.
Guitarist and vocalist Mario Lalli, his brother Larry on bass, and drummer Tony Tornay first connected through repeated encounters at desert parties and at the Lallis’ Rhythm & Brews venue, prompting the three to form a lasting trio. After serving as openers for former Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn and his SST Records-affiliated project, the band secured a recording opportunity on Ginn’s label. Their debut, Stinky Little Gods, emerged in 1995, followed in 1997 by Power of Three, both issued through SST. Brant Bjork, then drummer for Kyuss and Fu Manchu, briefly augmented the lineup on second guitar and contributed to two 7-inch singles before exiting to concentrate on Fu Manchu and his solo work. Departing SST, Fatso Jetson aligned with Bongload Records, which released their third album, Toasted, in 1998. The recording took place at Munkey Studios in Palm Desert, long regarded as the hub of the stoner-rock scene. Old friend and guitarist Gary Arce joined temporarily to accompany the band on a 1999 tour supporting Queens of the Stone Age alongside Toasted, then left in 2000. The Lalli brothers also participated in Desert Sessions recordings alongside associates from Kyuss, Queens of the Stone Age, and Earthlings.
