Findlay Brown, born in Britain and later based in Brooklyn, fashions roots-infused alternative country ballads laced with psychedelic flourishes. He first surfaced in 2007 via the pastoral Separated by the Sea. Subsequent releases Slow Light (2015) and Not Everything Beautiful Is Good (2018), both issued on Nettwerk, folded minimalist textures and African rhythms into his evolving palette.

His early life unfolded in Yorkshire’s East Ridings, where bare-knuckle fighting dominated his youth. A random encounter with a Jimi Hendrix album redirected the troubled young man from a likely jail sentence toward music. After settling in York he immersed himself in the regional scene. Broke and determined, he sold the Beatles autographs passed down by his grandfather, purchased a guitar, and relocated to London to chase a solo path.

That singular fusion of psychedelic rock and alternative country attracted the London imprint All Good Things, which issued his debut single “Down Among the Dead Men” in May 2006. He then signed with Peacefrog Records, releasing the Losing the Will to Survive EP that same year and the full-length Separated by the Sea in 2007. His U.S. debut, Love Will Find You, arrived in 2009 on Verve Forecast with production from Suede’s Bernard Butler.

Embracing a gentler, countryside sensibility, Slow Light drew inspiration from composers Philip Glass and Terry Riley, threading fresh sonic textures through his delicate folk songs. After leaving Brooklyn, Brown made his home in rural Denmark beyond Copenhagen, where the 2018 album Not Everything Beautiful Is Good further deepened his contemplative approach. He carried that exploration forward on 2021’s Being Young Is Getting Old, tracing dusty 1970s folk and cinematic chamber pop.
