Jim Thirlwell stands as the solitary force behind every recording issued through the Foetus project, even as the project cycled through numerous aliases—Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel, Foetus Über Frisco, and Foetus All-Nude Revue among them—and maintained a consistently abrasive sonic approach.

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Thirlwell moved to London in 1978 and there developed the core Foetus idea of dense, extreme soundscapes constructed from tape loops and interlocking rhythms as a deliberate departure from conventional rock structures. With no label interest, he launched Self-Immolation to release his first single, "O.K.F.M.," credited to Foetus Under Glass. Later that same year he issued his debut album, Deaf, under the name You've Got Foetus on Your Breath.

He continued issuing a rapid succession of solo albums, EPs, singles, and compilations that explored his industrial aesthetic before adopting the additional alias Clint Ruin. In 1986 he partnered with former Swans drummer Roli Mosimann to form the duo Wiseblood, which produced the album Dirtdish. Following the 1988 release Thaw, issued as Foetus Interruptus, Thirlwell assembled Foetus Corruptus, drawing members from Swans, Hugo Largo, and Unsane. The 1989 unofficial live document Rife and the 1990 official release Male, credited to Foetus in Excelsis Corruptus Deluxe, both captured the ensemble’s performances.

That collaboration led directly to the formation of Steroid Maximus, whose largely instrumental recordings suggested soundtracks to nonexistent films on the 1991 album Quilombo and the 1992 album Gondwanaland. Thirlwell reached a major-label agreement with Sony for the 1995 album Gash, released simply under the name Foetus, as were the subsequent EPs Null and Void.

In 1997 Thirsty Ear issued York (First Exit to Brooklyn) by the Foetus Symphony Orchestra, which included spoken narration by Lydia Lunch. The same label released Flow in 2001, again credited simply to Foetus, along with its companion remix collection Blow. Birdman Records put out Love in 2005; selections from that album later appeared in reworked form by Mike Patton, Matmos, Tweaker, and Fennesz on the 2007 release Vein, also issued by Birdman.
