An Italian guitarist and composer, Corbetta made his homes in Bologna, London, and Paris. Among those who studied with him were the celebrated Granata, Louis XIV, the Archduke of Austria, Charles II, and the Duke of Mantua. Five volumes of his music survive, though others may have disappeared; they contain both battute and pizzicate writing, meaning strumming and plucking. The contents range from suites for solo guitar to vocal pieces with guitar and continuo accompaniment. In the Baroque era his writing stands among the most distinguished models of French guitar technique and style. A large number of these works were dedicated to Charles II and Louis XIV.
