Biography
Operating from his Greenwich Village base, Frank Christian ranks among the most accomplished guitarists active in modern folk music. His expressive melodies have enriched both live shows and studio sessions for Nanci Griffith, Christine Lavin, Suzanne Vega, John Gorka, Dave Van Ronk, and the Smithereens. As a composer and singer he proves equally adept; the song “Three Flights Up” stood out on Nanci Griffith’s Grammy-winning album Other Voices, Other Rooms.
Christian first refined his instrumental technique at thirteen under the guidance of jazz guitarist Roosevelt Span. After relocating to Greenwich Village to pursue studies in literature and music at New York University, he soon immersed himself in the expanding acoustic-music community.
Although thirteen years elapsed between his 1982 debut solo release, Where Were You Last Night, and the follow-up From My Hands—which included appearances by Nanci Griffith, Lee Saterfield, and Garth Hudson of the Band—his artistic standards never wavered. Supporters encountered a quicker sequel in Mr. So and So, issued in 1997. The album blends intimate interpretations of material by Blind Willie McTell, Gordon Lightfoot, Jacques Brel, and Mance Lipscomb with seven new compositions.
