Gaerea, a Portuguese black metal band labeled "cathartic," shape an especially tormented strain of the style by merging hardcore and sludge metal components with intense emotional release. The outfit put out their debut album Unsettling Whispers on an independent basis in 2018. Gaerea secured a contract with Season of Mist before issuing the acclaimed Limbo in 2020, then sustained their development of a tormented and cinematic black metal approach across Mirage in 2022 and Coma in 2024.

Established in 2016, the group delivered their self-titled first EP in November of that year through Everlasting Spew. By electing total anonymity without even the single-word stage names typical of the genre, the musicians always performed concealed in black hoods marked by a sigil that recalled those from medieval demonology. Their cosmic-horror notion of "the void" offered nothing novel, yet the musical approach supplied fresh air to the genre. Thicker and crustier than the standard shrill black metal tone, the sound possessed a density that appealed to listeners from hardcore and sludge backgrounds while projecting an overpowering sense of rage, anguish, and despair. Gaerea developed this sound further on the debut full-length Unsettling Whispers, which appeared in 2018 on Transcending Obscurity. They moved to Season of Mist for the 2020 album Limbo, their most disquieting and accomplished work to that date, which arrived after the singles "Null" and the 11-minute "To Ain." Two years afterward, the band examined the emotional aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic via the similarly hopeless Mirage and explored clean vocals together with deeply felt melodic vistas on the alternately dreamy and combustive Coma in 2024.
