Biography
Gap Mangione, the older brother of Chuck Mangione, has passed the greater part of his professional life in Rochester, the city where he was born. Between 1960 and 1965 the siblings regularly appeared together as members of the bebop ensemble the Jazz Brothers, cutting three boppish albums for Riverside in 1960-61. Once that group disbanded, Gap remained in Rochester to lead his own trio. After Chuck began to gain wider recognition, Gap rejoined him on an occasional basis from 1970 through 1972, though his chief activity since then has been teaching piano locally. Under his own name he released two commercial big band sessions, both arranged by his brother Chuck, on GRC in 1971 and Mercury in 1972.
