George Adams stood out as a tenor saxophonist and flutist whose expressive passion led him to interrupt harmonic explorations with sudden screams or roars. Much like his associate Don Pullen, he traversed multiple musical idioms with an innovative approach. Although he began his musical journey on piano, Adams had switched to tenor saxophone in funk ensembles by his high school years. His first major tour came in 1961 alongside Sam Cooke. Two years later he settled in Ohio, performing regularly with organ combos over the ensuing period. Upon moving to New York in 1968, he collaborated with figures including Roy Haynes, Gil Evans, and Art Blakey. The period spent with Charles Mingus from 1973 to 1976 brought him widespread recognition. Following some work with McCoy Tyner, he and Don Pullen jointly directed an engaging quartet responsible for numerous recordings. In his later years, Adams, who sometimes delivered gritty blues vocals, joined James Blood Ulmer in Phalanx while making sporadic appearances with Mingus Dynasty.
