Biography
Known primarily for his work in avant-garde circles, the adaptable percussionist Pheeroan akLaff has collaborated with numerous forward-thinking figures across jazz during the past two decades. His initial appearances came alongside Jay Hoggard in 1975, followed by performances in New Haven, CT, as part of Leo Smith's New Dalta Ahkri. Beyond his extended partnership with altoist Oliver Lake—which encompassed contributions to the reggae ensemble Jump Up—he has also performed with Henry Threadgill's Sextet, New Air (stepping in for Steve McCall on the ensemble's final recordings from 1983-1986), George Adams, Sonny Sharrock, Anthony Davis, James Newton, Cecil Taylor, and Myra Melford. As a bandleader, akLaff issued material on Gramavision via an obscure EP in 1983 and on Mu in 1989.
