Following the 2005 breakup of Washington, D.C. post-punk outfit Q and Not U, its drummer John Davis joined forces with singer/songwriter Laura Burhenn to create Georgie James—an act named after a fictional, gender-fluid vocalist styled after Ziggy Stardust. Drawing on a shared admiration for the Zombies, the Kinks, and Simon & Garfunkel, the pair crafted vocal harmonies and melodic structures that diverged sharply from the raw, avant-garde intensity of Davis’s former band. Early in 2007, Burhenn on vocals and keyboards alongside Davis on vocals, guitar, bass, and drums released the three-song single Need Your Needs on her Laboratory Records imprint; this came after a handful of show-only demo recordings. The full-length debut Places, tracked with Chad Clark of Beauty Pill and T.J. Lipple of Aloha, appeared on Saddle Creek that fall. For concerts, bassist Paul Michel and drummer Andrew Black augmented the core duo as Georgie James played dates across the United States and Europe. The project ended in August 2008 when Burhenn and Davis opted to explore independent endeavors.
