Biography
Gerard Schwarz ranks among the era’s most productive conductors while sustaining a parallel identity as a trumpeter. Long associated with the Seattle Symphony, he maintained an active schedule following his 2011 departure from that leadership role. Ensembles across the United States and Europe have invited him as a guest conductor, and he has typically issued several recordings each year. In 2024 he led a recording of the operatic treatment of Stephen King’s The Shining for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.
Schwarz entered the world on August 19, 1947, in Weehawken, New Jersey. Both parents practiced medicine and cultivated a love of music that led them to bring their son regularly to concerts. He began trumpet studies at age eight, attended New York’s High School of Performing Arts, and refined his technique at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Lessons with New York Philharmonic principal trumpeter William Vacchiano prepared him for Juilliard, from which he received a bachelor’s degree in 1972.
By then his performing career had already progressed substantially. Between 1965 and 1973 he played with the American Brass Quintet on international tours, and from 1966 to 1972 he served as trumpeter, later advancing to first trumpet, with the American Symphony Orchestra. These experiences steered his artistic focus toward American repertoire.
He continued appearing as a brass player, holding the post of co-principal trumpeter with the New York Philharmonic from 1972 to 1975, performing with additional orchestras, and producing numerous LP recordings, several of which have since been reissued digitally. Composer Gunther Schuller received a commission from Schwarz for a trumpet concerto. At the same time, his conducting ambitions intensified. Engagements began in 1968 with the Eliot Feld Dance Company, where he eventually became music director. From 1975 he also served as music director of the 92nd Street Y Chamber Symphony—later renamed the New York Chamber Symphony—and of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. One of his earliest digital projects, the 1980 album American Music for Strings, featured the latter ensemble.
In 1984 Schwarz was named principal conductor of the Seattle Symphony and assumed the music directorship the following year, remaining until his retirement in 2011 and producing more than one hundred recordings with the orchestra. His broad programming emphasized American symphonic music from the first half of the twentieth century, particularly works by Howard Hanson and Aaron Copland. He guided the construction of the orchestra’s new home, Benaroya Hall. Additional guest appearances took him to orchestras in Europe and elsewhere, including the Tokyo Philharmonic, where he once conducted six concerts each season. In 2012 alone he released twenty-two albums.
After leaving Seattle—where he retained the title of conductor laureate—he accepted music directorships with the Palm Beach Symphony and the Frost Symphony Orchestra at the University of Miami in Florida. Two operatic recordings appeared in 2024: Michael Dellaira’s The Leopard, recorded with the Frost Opera Theater and Frost Symphony Orchestra, and Paul Moravec’s operatic adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining, recorded with the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.
