Biography
Gerry O'Beirne shaped the landscape of Irish music through his work as a producer, performer, and composer. Formerly a member of Patrick Street, he produced the supergroup’s Irish Times album along with multiple other releases by Kevin Burke, Martin O’Connor, and Andy Stewart. On guitar he appeared alongside Marianne Faithfull, performed at the White House, and served as the opening act for the Grateful Dead. Celtic artists including Mary Black and Maura O’Connell have recorded his songs, while he also issued recordings under his own name. Performing Songwriter placed his debut solo album, Half Moon Bay, among the top dozen independent records of 2000.
A self-taught player from Ireland’s County Clare, O’Beirne spent his formative years between the western counties of Ireland and Ghana. Those contrasting settings, together with the influence of the Beatles and Bob Dylan, informed his musical outlook. After taking a job in London he acquired his first guitar and later mastered both twelve- and six-string instruments. Returning to Ireland, he found himself drawn to the country’s traditional repertoire.
