Biography
The avant rock outfit Githead consists of Malka Spigel on bass and vocals, Wire’s Colin Newman on guitar and vocals, Robin Rimbaud—aka Scanner—also on guitar, and regular drumming support both live and in the studio from Max Franken. Newman and Spigel first joined forces on the former’s 1986 album Commercial Suicide, while Spigel and Franken had previously belonged to Minimal Compact, the under-recognized Israeli post-punk band. What began as a one-off project to mark the tenth anniversary of Newman and Spigel’s Swim label in 2004 quickly grew into a permanent group. Their initial offering, the six-track Headgit EP, appeared in early November 2004. Although Profile arrived just over half a year later, the songs’ fullness and directness showed that the band was still finding its footing on that debut. Githead continued to issue material every other year thereafter, releasing Art Pop in 2007 and Landing in 2009. Swim has remained the sole label for every one of the band’s recordings.
