Biography
Glenhope "Glen" Brown launched his musical path performing as a vocalist while also playing melodeon in the style of Augustus Pablo. He cut solo numbers and contributed harmony vocals to sessions overseen by Prince Buster, Sir Coxsone Dodd, Leslie Kong and Derrick Herriot. His most lasting impact arrived through establishing and running the reggae and dub imprints Pantomine and South East Music, where he produced material for U Roy, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, Prince Jazzbo, Johnny Clarke and Little Roy. The weighty rhythms that defined those dub sides earned him the nickname "The rhythm master." Early pressings, constrained by limited budgets to runs of one hundred copies, have grown steadily more accessible over time. Material cut between 1969 and 1976 resurfaced on the 1995 album "The Way To Mt. Zion," while recordings made alongside King Tubby from 1973 to 1979 appeared on the 1996 anthology "Termination Dub." Now based in New York, Brown continues writing and producing; in 2000 Small Axe and Terminal Head reworked several of his pieces for a single that also featured remixes of fellow reggae artist Yabby You.
