Born on 19 March 1947 in Greenwich, Connecticut, Glenn Close first gained recognition through a series of acclaimed film roles that included The World According To Garp, The Big Chill, The Natural, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Reversal Of Fortune, and 101 Dalmatians. Beyond the screen, she has also left a notable mark on musical theatre. After completing studies in drama and anthropology at the College of William & Mary, she spent time performing in regional productions and later joined the cast of Richard Rodgers’ short-lived musical Rex during the late 70s. A Tony Award nomination followed for her portrayal of Charity, the spirited spouse of P.T. Barnum, in the 1980 Broadway staging of Barnum. She later secured Tony Awards for Best Actress in Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing (1984) and Ariel Dorfman’s Death Of A Maiden (1992). Her most significant stage achievement arrived when she stepped into the role of the fading screen icon Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard on Broadway, succeeding the original star Patti LuPone. Critics praised the “untamed, larger-than-life performance” that earned her the title “the exciting new star of the American musical theatre of the 90s,” along with one of the production’s seven Tony Awards, this time for Best Actress In A Musical.
