Gold Connections functions as the creative vehicle for Virginia-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Will Marsh, fusing gritty D.I.Y. textures with concise yet thoughtfully inventive material. A regular collaborator with Car Seat Headrest's Will Toledo, Marsh first drew widespread notice through the Fat Possum label via his Toledo-produced 2017 EP, then broadened his sonic range on the 2018 album Popular Fiction. Following a string of modest Egghunt releases, he established his own imprint in 2020 and issued the Ammunition EP.

Marsh began playing guitar early and started composing songs at age 12. After participating in several garage bands throughout high school, he attended the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, where he dove into indie rock and started crafting and tracking fresh material. He also joined the college's student radio station, WCWM, which led to his 2014 encounter with fellow student Toledo. Over the ensuing years the pair developed a close friendship and working partnership, with Marsh performing temporarily in Toledo's band Car Seat Headrest while Toledo contributed to Marsh's newly launched Gold Connections endeavor. After Toledo handled recording, production, and multiple instrumental parts on Gold Connections' debut EP, Marsh secured a contract with Fat Possum Records. The label put out the 2016 single "Icarus" and followed it a year later with the self-titled, Toledo-produced EP.

Shifting beyond his initial lo-fi approach, Marsh tracked his subsequent project at indie pop figure Mitch Easter's Fidelitorium studio in North Carolina. Issued by Egghunt Records, the 2018 LP Popular Fiction retained some of Gold Connections' ragged character while widening Marsh's expressive range, a direction he continued on the 2019 EP Like a Shadow. Operating from Richmond, Marsh created his own imprint, Desert Land Records, and released the next EP, Ammunition, in November 2020.
