Formed in Oberlin, Ohio, in 1993 during their time at a nearby municipal college, the quartet Golden featured Ian Eagleson on guitar and vocals, Alex Minoff on guitar and vocals, Philip Manley on bass, and Jon Theodore on drums. Despite members pursuing studies abroad and launching separate endeavors, the group sustained its collaboration across the decade. Their debut appeared in 1998 via TransSolar, followed in 1999 by Super Golden Original Movement and then the cool pop swirl of Golden Summer in 2000. Manley simultaneously contributed to Trans Am, Theodore joined tours alongside Royal Trux, Palace, and the Mars Volta, Minoff tracked sessions with Rhode Island’s Six Finger Satellite, and Eagleson advanced a PhD in ethnomusicology. Into the new millennium several EPs surfaced, yet the band set all other work aside in 2002 to concentrate on its fourth album, Apollo Stars.
