As his leadership of the Los Angeles hardcore legends Black Flag neared its conclusion, Greg Ginn launched the instrumental outfit Gone, which from 1986 onward sporadically navigated an unusual intersection of atonal jazz, riff-heavy rock, and occasional funk excursions. The debut release, Let's Get Real, Real Gone for a Change, along with its successor, Gone II: But Never Too Gone, included future Rollins Band participants Sim Cain on drums and Andrew Weiss on bass. After those initial efforts Gone fell silent, resurfacing only in 1994 with a pair of new albums, Criminal Mind and All the Dirt That's Fit to Print. By then Cain and Weiss had departed—Weiss having already left the Rollins Band to handle bass for Ween—so bassist Steve Sharp and drummer Gregory Moore stepped in. Further albums followed in 1996 and 1998, titled Best Left Unsaid and Country Dumb. Other commitments plus distribution setbacks at Ginn’s and Gone’s label SST thereafter restricted activity to sporadic live shows.
