Originating from Leeds, The Grammatics operate as an indie rock ensemble whose primary influences stem from British art rock acts of the 1990s, among them Blur, Pulp, and Suede. The lineup came together in 2006, uniting vocalist Owen Brinley, drummer Dominic Ord, bassist Rory O'Hara, and cellist Emilia Ergin. Linked to the independent imprint Dance to the Radio, the group put out two early singles—Shadow Committee in 2007 and D.I.L.E.M.M.A./Polar Swelling in 2008—before delivering its first full-length album.
