Biography
Having enrolled at the RAM, Bantock displayed notable talent for composition at an early stage. In addition to championing the output of fellow composers active during his lifetime, he later served as an instructor at Birmingham University, where he aimed to equip pupils with broad cultural grounding that encompassed literature, languages, and mathematics. Wagner and Richard Strauss left a clear mark on his approach, leading him to produce numerous expansive orchestral and choral compositions. Rather than relying on dissonance or chromatic procedures, these pieces rest on common chords and diatonic discords; the textures remain homophonic, with occasional chromatic touches that evoke a semi-oriental flavor, an effect possibly traceable to his initial preparation for the Indian civil service. Although his scores received frequent hearings early in the century, most have since disappeared from active programming.
