Biography
Growing up in Pennsylvania instilled in songwriter Greg Garing a fondness for traditional country alongside Irish music. A show by bluegrass legend Bill Monroe ultimately convinced the 18-year-old Garing to depart his Erie birthplace for Nashville. There he seized every opportunity to study Monroe’s performances and at times joined him onstage. After assembling a honky tonk country band in 1993, Garing encountered the music of Garbage, PJ Harvey, and Tricky. Although his earlier traditional approach had drawn listeners and favorable notices, he began merging those roots with more contemporary textures. Atlantic then signed him, resulting in the release of his debut album Alone, which featured Mike Watt on bass and received praise for its gritty, evocative character yet failed to register commercially. By 2002 Garing had already established himself in New York City, where he continued performing regularly.
