Harold Richard Lang entered the world on 21 December 1920 in Daly City, California, and departed on 26 July 1985 in Chico, California. After rigorous classical training he danced for the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo and later joined the American Ballet Theatre, all while simultaneously building a second career in the choruses of Broadway musicals and touring comedies. During the 1940s he appeared in Mr. Strauss Goes To Boston (1945), Three To Make Ready (1946), Look Ma, I’m Dancin’ (1948), and the Cole Porter success Kiss Me, Kate (1948). His portrayal of Bill Calhoun in the latter production, highlighted by the number “Bianca,” established his reputation. The following decade brought further stage work in Make A Wish (1951), the title role in a 1952 revival of Pal Joey that also reached London, Shangri-La (1956), Ziegfeld Follies (1957), and a 1959 revival of On The Town. By the 1960s opportunities narrowed, though he still performed as Teddy in I Can Get It For You Wholesale (1962). In 1970 Lang relocated to California and accepted a teaching post in dance at California State University, Chico, where he remained on the faculty until his death.
