Hillstomp’s Henry Kammerer and John Johnson first crossed paths in 2001 at a solo performance by Kammerer in Portland, Oregon. Johnson had never felt drawn to blues, yet Kammerer’s self-taught slide guitar immediately caught his ear. Although Johnson had trained on jazz saxophone and was then playing bass in local alternative rock bands, he decided to sit behind the drums for Kammerer. With a homemade kit and Kammerer supplying vocals and guitar, the two shaped their own brand of country blues and issued their first recording, the album One Word, in 2004. Two years later they released The Woman That Ended the World.
