In the early 1990s the lo-fi pop group Home took shape in Tampa, Florida, built around guitarist/vocalist Andrew Deutsch, keyboardist/vocalist Eric Morrison, and bassist/vocalist Brad Truax. After developing a local audience the trio began self-recording eight cassettes labeled I through VIII, pressing them exclusively for a small number of Tampa-area outlets on the band’s own Screw Music Forever imprint. Those cassettes attracted the attention of the independent label Relativity, which put out IX in 1995. Relativity’s subsequent decision to abandon rock for urban music left the band free to pursue other options, and two labels stepped forward: Jet Set pursued the more pop-focused songs while Emperor Jones embraced the experimental material. Sessions featuring drummers Bill Bowman and Chuck Stephens yielded a pair of 1996 releases, X on Emperor Jones and Elf: Gulf Bore Waltz on Jet Set. The group then relocated to New York and added permanent drummer Chris Sturgeon. Netherregions appeared in 1998, followed a year later by XIV.
