William Fussell, an Atlanta-based indie musician tied to the post-punk outfit Mood Rings and the synth pop venture Promise Keeper, introduced the enigmatic Honey Harper project and its country leanings in 2017. After issuing his first full-length album, Starmaker, in 2020, Fussell recast the endeavor as more of a collective effort with the arrival of 2022's Honey Harper & the Infinite Sky.

Fussell first achieved recognition in 2011 through the richly textured post-punk band Mood Rings. Following his relocation to London in 2015, he issued a synth-oriented work under the Promise Keeper name before revealing his brooding country alter ego in 2017. In the Harper role, shadowy ethereal qualities carried over from prior efforts shape a compositional and interpretive approach rooted in the lore of country music, especially its measured and solitary strains. After signing with Canadian indie Arbutus Records, he put out the debut EP Universal Country in late 2017, with the first full-length effort Starmaker appearing in early 2020.

During the following two years Fussell revisited the project from a fresh perspective, reshaping Honey Harper into a more collaborative setup in which keyboardist Alana Pagnutti helped shape the songwriting and arrangements. He further incorporated a complete backing ensemble under the name the Infinite Sky. The first release in this configuration was 2022's Honey Harper & the Infinite Sky.
