Biography
Prior to 9/11, the New York duo I Am the World Trade Center adopted an unconventional process for composing and producing original material by capturing every sample and loop on a laptop computer. Amy Dykes supplies the melodic vocals atop these constructions, which reflect the primary influence of St. Etienne, the Stone Roses, Fatboy Slim, and Cornershop, all audible on the band’s first released recording, the Christmas Two compilation issued by Kindercore Records. Their proper debut album, Out of the Loop, appeared in summer 2001, with the follow-up Tight Connection arriving in 2002. Two years later the group tracked The Cover Up, yet while touring the East Coast in support of that album and three weeks before its intended release date, Dykes was stricken with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leading I Am the World Trade Center to enter an immediate hiatus so she could pursue a full recovery.
