Biography
Ian Hawgood works as an ambient musician, mastering engineer, and visual artist while overseeing the respected imprint Home Normal. Field recordings, tape reels, vintage tube amplifiers, and acoustic tools including pump organ and vibraphone frequently shape his output, producing wistful drones that evoke the atmosphere of faded photographs. Dozens of albums have appeared under his name, among them the solo titles Snow Roads from 2009 and Love Retained from 2016, plus joint efforts involving bvdub, Wil Bolton, Danny Norbury, and additional partners. Separate endeavors encompass Slow Reels alongside James Murray and Observatories with Craig Tattersall.
Originally based in the U.K., Hawgood relocated to Tokyo during 2007 and issued material through netlabels along with limited-run cassettes and CD-Rs. Under the alias Koen Park and a few other names he created beat-driven IDM, whereas ambient and drone work largely surfaced under his given name. He established Home Normal in December 2008, activating the label the next March with early entries from Celer, Chihei Hatakeyama, and Greg Davis. Jointly operated with Ben Jones, the imprint fell under Hawgood’s curation; he routinely handled mastering and visual design for its releases, supported by supplementary designers Jeremy Bible and Christian Roth. Additional outlets such as Experimedia, hibernate, and Dragon’s Eye Recordings carried his recordings as well. Slow Films in Low Light, a 2010 collection of Hawgood pieces reworked by contributors including Library Tapes and the Green Kingdom, followed. The Truth Hurts, a 2011 partnership with bvdub, marked the inaugural release on Home Normal’s Nomadic Kids Republic sublabel. Hawgood assembled the post-classical quartet Black Elk featuring Tim Martin, cellist Danny Norbury, and pianist Clem Leek; their first album, Sparks, surfaced in 2012 ahead of the 2014 Sketches series.
Hawgood transferred his base to Warsaw in 2016. Love Retained emerged that same year, succeeded by collaborations with Norbury, Giulio Aldinucci, Phil Tomsett, and Stijn Hüwels. He settled in Brighton, England, toward the close of 2019. Farewell Islands, a Slow Reels album with James Murray, reached audiences via Morr Music in 2020. Emerging, recorded with Wil Bolton, appeared on Hidden Vibes in 2021. Several further albums with Hüwels included the self-titled 2022 outing issued as Modular Sleep Patterns. Hawgood also launched Observatories with Craig Tattersall, resulting in two albums on the French label IIKKI. A split recording with Fields We Found was released in 2022 as well. Health concerns prompted Hawgood to enter an extended hiatus from every music-related activity in 2023.
