Rutger Zuydervelt operates under the moniker Machinefabriek as a Netherlands-based creator active in music, sound art, and graphic design. Across an extensive catalog he has explored electro-acoustic composition, field recordings, digital processing, noise, and lowercase sound. Rather than adhering to standard ambient or drone conventions, the resulting pieces shift unpredictably between unsettling, ominous textures and moments of minimal introspection, always inviting listeners to engage with sustained focus. Over the years he has worked alongside many musicians such as Celer, Peter Broderick, and Gareth Davis while also issuing well-received solo recordings, among them the 2008 album Dauw. In addition to frequent live appearances and installation projects, Zuydervelt has directed more attention toward composing for films, documentaries, and dance during the 2010s. Although most of his output remains instrumental, the 2019 release With Voices brought together several singers.

Born in 1978, Zuydervelt received limited childhood instruction on piano and guitar before pursuing graphic design at college level. Beginning in 2004 he issued his own CD-Rs under the Machinefabriek name, handling artwork duties personally. Lampse introduced his debut full-length album, Marijn, in 2006, while the 2007 double-CD Weleer gathered highlights from those initial efforts. That same year Root Strata put out Slaapzucht, drawn from two prior CD-Rs; Kning Disk released the remix compilation Bijeen; and a double-CD titled Kruimeldief appeared, featuring the composition “Stofstuk” alongside reworkings by Alva Noto and Pita. Further 2007 partnerships involved Aaron Martin, Gareth Hardwick, and Leo Fabriek. The following year saw joint projects with Stephen Vitiello on Box Music, Soccer Committee on Drawn, and Freiband on Oahu, plus the Dekorder solo album Dauw and assorted other individual releases. In 2009 Machinefabriek teamed with Peter Broderick for Blank Grey Canvas Sky, Tim Catlin for Glisten, Andrea Belfi for Pulses & Places, and additional partners. Cold Spring later gathered limited-edition tracks onto the 2010 CD Daas and the 2011 CD Veldwerk, while Powershovel Audio issued Diorama; also in 2011 a collaboration involving Broderick, Kleefstra-Bakker-Kleefstra, and Nils Frahm emerged within the Mort Aux Vaches series.

Machinefabriek’s initial joint effort with Banabila surfaced in 2012, alongside Lichtung with Steve Roden, Deep Fried with Jaap Blonk, multiple singles shared with Celer, and solo titles such as Colour Tones on Fang Bomb and Secret Photographs on Important Records. Further 2013 pairings produced Signals with Minus Pilots and Machine Rooms with Sanja Harris. Backwards issued the percussion-focused Drum Solos as an LP in 2014; Glacial Movements released Stillness Soundtracks for Films by Esther Kokmeijer that year; and Zuydervelt self-released Attention, The Doors Are Closing!, the score for choreography by Iván Pérez. Zoharum presented the 2015 score The Measures Taken for Alexander Whitley’s dance work and followed with the 2016 remix collection Wendingen. During the same period Zuydervelt commenced scoring the sci-fi adventure game Astroneer. His soundtrack for BECOMING, another Pérez dance piece, appeared in 2017 together with Weerkatsing alongside Orphax, Seeker alongside Aaron Martin, and the Zoharum compilation Assemblage. The 2018 score for Engel, a dance and circus performance by Marta Alstadsæter and Kim-Jomi Fischer, completed that phase.

Eilean Rec issued the 2019 Banabila collaboration Entropia (Eilean 60) early in the year, soon followed by With Voices, Machinefabriek’s debut on Western Vinyl, which incorporated vocals by Marissa Nadler, Richard Youngs, Chantal Acda, and others. Glacial Movements brought out Stillness Soundtracks II, a second set of pieces for Esther Kokmeijer’s cinematic landscapes, in early 2020. Later that year the solo album Amalgaam surfaced, joined by the collaboration Oehoe with vocalist/violinist Anne Bakker.
