Biography
Ian Partridge stands among England’s most widely traveled and compelling lyric tenors, preserving much of his vocal freshness well into his sixties while traversing an expansive stretch of the repertory. Thoroughly trained and richly musical, he moves with equal assurance and distinction across music spanning the Renaissance and the present day. Although modest in size, his instrument possesses genuine body, characterized by a solid lower range and a finely etched grain that conferred interpretive weight on every appearance. Early frustration with the limited chances then available to British singers for German repertoire gave way to an extensive series of recordings in which he captured readings marked by warmth, insight, and vocal attractiveness. Working almost solely as a recitalist and oratorio performer, he sustained a discreet yet lasting career that earned consistent esteem from fellow musicians and listeners. His higher education in music commenced at the Royal College of Music in 1956; he subsequently moved to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for vocal instruction with the bass Norman Walker and conducting lessons from Aylmer Buesst. Momentum built quickly after his first solo engagement, a 1958 Messiah in Bexhill.
From Monteverdi, Schütz, Handel, and Bach through Schoenberg, Weill, and Britten, Partridge delivered performances notable for both technical precision and interpretive clarity. Guidance from Britten and from Peter Pears, who coached him in shaping phrases, refined his already exact diction into something more supple and speech-like. He collaborated with Pierre Boulez on a recording of Schoenberg’s Die Jacobsleiter, describing the composer-conductor as both inspiring and agreeable to work with; additional projects with Boulez encompassed Schumann’s Der Rose Pilgerfahrt and Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol. Long admired for his portrayal of the Evangelist in the Bach Passions, he also recorded that role in Norwegian composer Trond Kverno’s St. Matthew Passion, a score the tenor called “powerful” and one that requires unaccompanied singing throughout its hour-and-a-half duration in a modern treatment of plainsong. Joint appearances with actress Prunella Scales yielded more than 300 presentations of the program “An Evening with Queen Victoria,” built around songs composed by Prince Albert. Among his catalogue of over 150 recordings stand Schubert’s Die Winterreise and Die schöne Müllerin (the latter singled out by BBC Music Magazine as a preferred version), Schumann’s Liederkreis, Op. 39, and Dichterliebe, Peter Warlock’s Curlew River, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ On Wenlock Edge, a complete set of Handel’s Chandos Anthems, Purcell’s The Fairy Queen, and the part of Iopas in the document of Colin Davis’ Covent Garden staging of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, the production that marked Partridge’s stage debut in 1969. As a professor at the Royal Academy of Music he has conducted master classes in song and early music at venues ranging from Aldeburgh to Ravinia to Versailles. In 1992 he was awarded the CBE in recognition of his contributions to music.
