Biography
Elly Ameling, a soprano from the Netherlands, built her reputation through distinguished performances of art song and oratorio, achieving worldwide recognition without ever becoming an operatic headliner. Although she appeared once on stage as Ilia in Mozart’s Idomeneo during 1973 and 1974, she otherwise steered clear of opera throughout a career that spanned more than forty years, devoting herself instead to the concert platform and recital hall.
Her early training took place in Rotterdam under Jo Bollekamp and Jacoba Dresden Dhont, after which she refined her command of French song with Pierre Bernac. International notice followed her first-prize wins at the 1956 Hertogenbosch competition and the 1958 Geneva competition. Subsequent recital debuts in Amsterdam in 1961, London in 1966, and New York in 1968 marked successive steps in a trajectory that carried her to audiences everywhere, with a particularly warm reception in Japan.
On the concert stage she became especially admired for her readings of Bach and Mozart, yet her interpretations of Haydn and Mendelssohn oratorios, together with Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, also drew consistent praise. Her programs further embraced Alban Berg’s Sieben frühe Lieder and Altenberg Lieder, Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’été, and Ravel’s Shéhérazade. In 1959 she took part in the premiere of Frank Martin’s Mystère de la Nativité and later sang at the 1975 wedding of Princess Christina of the Netherlands as well as at the 1980 Royal Crowning Ceremony of Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands.
Songs in German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, Spanish, and Japanese formed her broad repertory. While most closely identified with Franz Schubert, she proved equally persuasive in Mozart, Schumann, Brahms, and Hugo Wolf. Her affinity for the French mélodie is documented in EMI’s complete recordings of Debussy, Fauré, Poulenc, and Ravel, all made with Dalton Baldwin at the piano. Other notable projects include a recording of the complete songs of Constantijn Huygens with baritone Max van Egmond, recital presentations of music by Joaquin Rodrigo and Xavier Montsalvatge, and performances of works by Frank Martin, Samuel Barber, and Benjamin Britten. She also offered occasional cabaret programs in smaller venues, among them the Stratford Festival in Canada.
Ameling’s light soprano was prized for its purity, its seamless control of dynamics, and its rich palette of expressive colors. She remained nearly motionless while performing, so that the smallest hand movement acquired considerable weight. After more than thirty years as a public favorite she withdrew from the recital stage in the mid-1990s following a sequence of farewell appearances in cities she especially cherished, yet she has continued to transmit her knowledge of song through master classes for younger singers.
