The electronic pop shaped by IDER stands out through the paired lead vocals of songwriters Megan Markwick and Lily Somerville, whose deliveries shift between unison passages and layered harmonies. A characteristically lean and downcast atmosphere first surfaced on their 2016 single "Sorry."

Markwick and Somerville encountered each other in the early 2010s while attending the University of Falmouth, where they completed a joint music assignment and performed together in overlapping groups. Their collaborative writing began during that time in Cornwall. The two stayed in touch and formed IDER after becoming roommates in North London. Released without outside involvement, their self-produced and self-released debut track "Sorry" appeared in 2016.

Pop singer/songwriter/producer Shura developed an affinity for the material and oversaw production of the duo's first EP, Gut Me Like an Animal. Issued by Aesop in March 2017, the record incorporated a cappella passages, ambient electronics, and more rhythmic pop constructions. BBC Radio 1 added their songs to rotation during the same period, leading IDER to sign with Glassnote Records and issue "Learn to Let Go" and "Body Love" in the second half of 2017.

"You've Got Your Whole Life Ahead of You Baby," featuring production by Rodaidh McDonald (Adele, the xx), surfaced in mid-2018 and was followed later that year by "Mirror." "Brown Sugar" and "Wu Baby," both retaining IDER's typically chill mode, constituted the duo's releases through the first half of 2019. Their debut album, Emotional Education, arrived in July of that year.
