Country-pop artist Ilse DeLange rose to prominence as one of the Netherlands’ most prominent performers of her era thanks to the 1998 chart-topping debut album World of Hurt. Born on May 13, 1977, in Almelo, Holland, she devoted much of her youth to entering regional talent competitions and later formed a country-oriented duo alongside guitarist Joop Liefland; the pair appeared at the Dutch Country Music Awards in 1994, yet their progress faltered and the collaboration ended the following year. She next appeared briefly with the pop outfit Wij, which put out the 1996 single “De Oorlog Meegemaakt.” Two years afterward DeLange became a member of the country ensemble Cash on Delivery and journeyed with the group to Nashville, where they cut an album under producer Barry Beckett. Released domestically under her own name, World of Hurt ultimately moved nearly 500,000 units, topped the Dutch album chart, and spawned the Top 40 single “I’m Not So Tough,” while DeLange herself received the Edison Award for Best Female Singer and the TMF Award for Best New Artist. The interim live set Dear John arrived in 1999, followed a year later by her second studio effort, Livin’ on Love. More rock-leaning than its predecessor, that record climbed to number five and delivered a Top 40 hit through its title track. DeLange headed back to the United States to make 2003’s Clean Up, which again led the Dutch charts and featured her biggest single to that point, the Kane collaboration “Before You Let Me Go”; the project also earned her a second Edison Award for Best Female Singer. Following the successful duet “Blue” with Italian vocalist Zucchero, she teamed with American producer Patrick Leonard for the 2006 number-one album The Great Escape, which included the hits “The Lonely One” and “I Love You.” Her run of success persisted in 2008 with Incredible, certified quintuple platinum in the Netherlands largely because of the single “Miracle.” After issuing the 2009 concert recording Live in Ahoy, she delivered Next to Me in 2010, her fourth consecutive chart-topping studio album at home. Eye of the Hurricane extended the streak through 2012. In 2013 DeLange shifted focus to television, serving as a coach on The Voice of Holland beginning with its fourth season and remaining through the subsequent two installments before moving to The Voice Kids and later joining The Voice Senior in 2018. While active on those programs she also participated in the country-pop supergroup the Common Linnets, which released albums in 2014 and 2015. Following a six-year break from solo work, she resurfaced in 2018 with a self-titled album and followed it the next year with Gravel & Dust.
