Indian Ocean emerged as India's foremost underground triumph. Operating as a self-contained cult act, the ensemble merged Indian folk traditions with Western rock, its members refusing to accept any creative boundaries that mainstream expectations might impose. Audiences have embraced Indian Ocean wholeheartedly, their concise yet impeccable catalog delivering an intensely gratifying listening experience.

The group originated in 1984 as an instrumental pair, Susmit Sen on guitars and Asheem Chakravarty on percussion. Rahul Ram's arrival on bass in 1991 brought the band's first recording contract. Their self-titled debut album appeared in 1994 with Shaleen Sharma on drums. Amit Kilam replaced Shaleen that same year, establishing the lineup that remains in place. Desert Rain arrived in 1997, captured live at Mandi House, Delhi. The album earned immediate acclaim among critics and yielded a second record deal. Kandisa, issued in March 2000, elevated Indian Ocean to national prominence and ranks among the highest-selling releases by any Indian band. After three years of worldwide touring, Jhini followed in 2003, paired with the group's first music video. Black Friday, a movie soundtrack, appeared in 2005.
