Biography
Soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian displays remarkable range across opera, classical recitals and choral works, traditional Armenian repertoire, cinematic scores, and pop-inflected crossover projects. Although her family roots lie in Armenia, she channeled substantial creative energy toward that heritage only after reaching adulthood, having first traveled to the country as a mature artist.
Born February 1, 1974, in Zahlé in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, Bayrakdarian moved with her Armenian family to Canada during her teenage years. She completed a biomedical engineering degree at the University of Toronto in 1997, yet pivoted toward vocal performance after receiving a Metropolitan Opera National Council Award the same year. In 1998 she enrolled at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, where she captured the institution’s first Marilyn Horne Foundation Vocal Competition prize—an achievement that inaugurated a string of honors. Subsequent distinctions encompass the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, Armenia’s highest cultural distinction the Moyses Khronenatsi Medal, and four straight Juno Awards for Best Classical Album in Canada.
Her profile rose swiftly in the opening years of the twenty-first century, bringing engagements at leading houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, and La Scala in Milan. Her operatic choices span Handel to the modern score of William Bolcom’s A View from the Bridge. Concert and choral appearances have placed her under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, Christoph von Dohnányi, and Christoph Eschenbach. Film work includes the track “Evenstar” on The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the 2008 documentary A Long Journey Home chronicling her initial visit to Armenia, and North American tours devoted to the music of Komitas Vardapet.
Recordings have appeared on the CBC, Analekta, and Delos labels, among others, encompassing opera, crossover efforts such as Tango Notturno from 2008, and collections centered on Armenian music. In 2020 she released The Other Cleopatra, an album devoted to arias portraying the Armenian queen Tigrane. Bayrakdarian currently serves on the voice faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
