Isabelle van Keulen stands out as a violinist whose programming spans both modern compositions and core classical works, with frequent chamber appearances and occasional turns on viola. Born December 16, 1966, in the modest Dutch community of Mijdrecht, she grew up alongside an artist father and a sister who played flute. Violin lessons began at age six under Theo de Bakker, leading to her first public performance at ten. After attending Alkwin College in Uithoorn she entered Amsterdam’s Sweelinck Conservatory in 1984, where Davina van Wely served as her main instructor while Vladimir Spivakov, Boris Gutnikov, and Sándor Végh provided additional guidance. Two early competition victories accelerated her path: the Menuhin Competition in Folkestone, England, in 1983 and the Eurovision Young Musician of the Year Competition held in Geneva the following year. Her recording career opened in 1988 on Deutsche Grammophon when she joined Gidon Kremer’s octet for Schubert’s Octet in F major, D. 803. Numerous further chamber projects followed, many undertaken with pianist Ronald Brautigam during the initial phase of her professional life. She established the Isos Quartet in 1995 and performed with the ensemble as first violinist. From 1996 through 2006 she held the post of artistic director at the Delft International Music Festival. Solo engagements remain central to her schedule, and contemporary music occupies a prominent place in both her concert programs and her discography; among the works she has introduced is Erkki-Sven Tüür’s violin-and-clarinet concerto Noesis (2006). Releases have appeared on Koch International, BIS, and Challenge Classics, the last of these including a complete survey of Grigory Frid’s music for violin and piano recorded with pianist Oliver Triendl.
