Biography
J. Cole established himself among rap’s biggest commercial forces after breaking through in 2011, maintaining visibility even as later releases grew steadily more introspective and lyric-driven. Signed as the inaugural act to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation imprint, the Fayetteville, North Carolina native scored double-platinum status with the lead single “Work Out” from Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011), launching an unbroken run of Billboard 200-topping projects that included Born Sinner (2013), the Grammy-nominated 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014), 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), and KOD (2018). Through his own Dreamville Records he has spotlighted emerging artists, most prominently via the Revenge of the Dreamers sequence of collaborative compilations. Revenge of the Dreamers III (2019), another number-one LP on the Dreamville label, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. Cole returned to the Billboard 200 summit with The Off-Season (2021) and assembled the Dreamville project D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape; he also dropped the 2024 mixtape Might Delete Later. Throughout, he has remained outspoken on social and hip-hop-related concerns, prioritizing thought-provoking content over pure entertainment.
Born in Frankfurt, Germany, and raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Jermaine Cole first connected with hip-hop via his stepfather’s copy of 2Pacalypse Now, sparking an enduring admiration for 2Pac alongside deep engagement with Nas, the Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, and Canibus. Strong high-school academics earned him a scholarship to St. John’s University in New York City, where the aspiring rapper and producer recognized an opportunity to advance his craft. Repeated attempts to hand a demo to Jay-Z outside the mogul’s office eventually paid off with a chance encounter, though the initial response was distinctly cool; weeks afterward Cole received a surprising call and an invitation to contribute to The Blueprint 3, appearing on the fittingly named “A Star Is Born.” Armed with just one prior mixtape, The Come Up—which already displayed his production alongside Salaam Remi, Large Professor, Just Blaze, and Kanye West—he joined Roc Nation. By late 2010 he delivered two more projects for the label, The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights.
Roc Nation issued Cole’s proper debut, Cole World: The Sideline Story, in 2011, which entered the Billboard 200 at number one. Its biggest track, “Work Out,” marked his first Top 40 pop hit as lead artist, peaking at number 13 and later achieving double-platinum certification. Born Sinner arrived in 2013 and yielded singles such as the Miguel-assisted “Power Trip,” a number-19 hit, and the TLC-featured “Crooked Smile,” which reached number 27; “Power Trip” also brought Cole his first Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Named for his childhood address, 2014 Forest Hills Drive extended his streak of chart-topping albums in 2014, with “No Role Models” reaching the Top 40 and the project itself nominated for Best Rap Album. A lesser-charting single, “Apparently,” received a nomination the same year for Best Rap Performance. Notably free of guest features, 2014 Forest Hills Drive nonetheless reflected Cole’s collaborative spirit. A distribution arrangement with Interscope accelerated Dreamville’s expansion; the label, founded earlier by Cole and manager Ibrahim Hamad, soon released projects by Bas, Cozz, and Omen and issued the first two Revenge of the Dreamers compilations.
When Cole delivered his somber fourth album, 4 Your Eyez Only, in 2016, he already held platinum certifications for his prior three LPs, ten Hot 100 entries as lead artist, and three featured appearances, among them Jeremih’s “Planes,” another Grammy-nominated track. 4 Your Eyez Only prolonged his run of number-one albums; under revised Billboard methodology every song charted on the Hot 100, an ironic outcome given its minimal pop leanings. KOD, released in 2018, offered a dark, reflective warning on mental health, substance issues, and materialism. It debuted at number one and included two self-features from Cole in altered, pitched-down form as the character kiLL edward. The third Revenge of the Dreamers installment, also Grammy-nominated, surfaced in 2019 and supplied Cole with the headlining hit “Middle Child.”
His sixth LP, the Grammy-nominated The Off-Season, debuted at number one in May 2021 and featured guest spots from 21 Savage, Lil Baby, and 6lack. The following year brought the fourth Dreamville compilation, D-Day: A Gangsta Grillz Mixtape, which reached number 11 on the Billboard 200 with Cole appearing on one-third of its tracks. Two standalone 2023 singles, “On the Street” with J-Hope and “The Secret Recipe” with Lil Yachty, both entered the Hot 100, and early 2024 saw the arrival of the mixtape Might Delete Later, highlighted by cuts such as “7 Minute Drill” and “Crocodile Tearz.” In November 2024 Cole reissued his 2009 mixtape The Warm Up to streaming platforms alongside the third episode of his podcast Inevitable, which centered on that project; the re-release debuted at number 159 on the Billboard 200. The fifth episode revisited his 2010 mixtape Friday Night Lights, prompting another simultaneous streaming reissue.
