Biography
James Last established himself as a German big-band leader whose enormous popularity throughout Europe never translated into equivalent recognition in the United States. His signature approach involved reshaping contemporary pop songs for large ensembles, and the string of “party albums” he produced gained equal renown. Across his entire career he moved well beyond fifty million records.
As a youngster he took up the piano before switching to bass in his teens. At seventeen, in 1946, he entered Hans-Gunther Oesterreich’s Radio Bremen Dance Orchestra. Two years later he assumed leadership of the Becker-Last Ensemble and kept the group active for seven years. During that span a German jazz poll named him the nation’s finest bassist three years running, from 1950 through 1952. Once the ensemble dissolved, he served as staff arranger for Polydor Records and multiple European broadcasters. Throughout the following decade he shaped successful releases for Helmut Zacharias and Caterina Valente.
Last issued his debut album, Non-Stop Dancing, in 1965, presenting concise versions of current hits unified by a driving dance rhythm and the sound of an enthusiastic audience. The record succeeded at once and elevated him to major status across Europe. In the ensuing twenty years he delivered more than fifty additional LPs, among them further installments in the Non-Stop Dancing series. On these projects he broadened the concept by incorporating material from varied nations and musical styles while featuring guests such as Richard Clayderman and Astrud Gilberto.
Although his concerts and recordings maintained steady commercial strength—particularly in England, where fifty-two of his albums charted between 1967 and 1986, placing him behind only Elvis Presley in total hits—he scored just a single chart single, “The Seduction,” the main theme from the 1980 film American Gigolo.
