Formed in 1994, the Brazilian ska-reggae-rock ensemble Jammil e Uma Noites united Tuca Fernandes, Manno Góes, and Beto Espínola as an informal cover outfit that drew material from Bob Marley, UB40, and Jorge Ben. Performances unfolded in beachfront bars, where American rock elements merged with Caribbean island sounds and the African-derived rhythms native to Brazil. Based in Bahia, the group joined Banda Beijo, Rapazolla, Banda Eva, and similar acts at the forefront of the axé movement, a fusion of Brazilian and Caribbean styles encompassing samba, reggae, maracatu, and axé soul. Although axé first surfaced in the 1980s, it reached full momentum by the late 1990s with a swiftly expanding national audience. Local industry attention led EMI to offer Jammil e Uma Noites a contract in 1997, resulting in the debut album Tanta Coisa Mudau. A second EMI release, Contato, appeared in 1998 before the band shifted to Abril Music. Roughly one album emerged each year thereafter, issued through progressively smaller independent companies, until 2006’s Luau arrived with no label backing at all. The band maintains national touring activity and a committed grassroots following.
