Biography
Jan Swerts, a Flemish composer, singer, and songwriter, self-released his debut album Weg (Road) in 2010, garnering considerable critical acclaim in his home country. Profoundly melancholic and minimalist in its piano-driven approach, the music was subtly framed by beautiful string and woodwind arrangements, skillfully merging the contemporary classical sensibilities of Sylvain Chauveau, Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Max Richter with the confessional folk-pop style of Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake to produce occasionally heart-rending outcomes that, though bearing Flemish titles, were sung entirely in English and most powerfully recalled the work of Dakota Suite. His follow-up, Anatomie van de Melancholie (Anatomy of Melancholy), appeared in 2013 with significantly richer and more elaborate arrangements that sometimes delved into jazz.
